BITS
Hi, my name is La'Shay but you can call me Shay for short! It's my first time doing this program and I like it so far. In the beginning, we all had to meet our peers that would later become our partners and some, our friends. The first week we had a debate that was very fun and exciting. The debate was about the fire in Chester called "Beyond The Flames". The role that I played in the debate was the chief/firefighters. We were basically arguing with other groups(citizens, mayor, nurses, and the company)to find out whose fault it was for the people who lost their lives in the fire. At the end, we all blamed the Mayor & The company. L0L it was crazy!!!!But all in reality, no one knew who was to be blamed. It's a new and fun experience for me!

SMART Goals
A SMART goal is away to realize if a goal is well, smart. Is my goal Specific? Is my goal Measurable? What will my Action be? Is my goal Realistic? Does my goal have a Time frame?
My summer goal is to finish the application/applying process to The Art Institute of Philadelphia. My goal is specific because it is exact. It's measurable because I can manage it. I am taking action on my own to accomplish it. it is realistic because it is possible. It is possible for me to accomplish this before the end of the summer.
My long term goal is to become a film maker and performer by the time I'm 25. It's measurable because i can manage it. I'm taking action by applying for the film program at The Art Institute of Philadelphia. It's realistic because I'm taking the other steps and it's possible. It's timely because seven years should be long enough to accomplish my goals.

My name is khalia and this is my first year at this summer program and by me begin here had me look different on life. The one of ma favorite we had did was the chester fire and how things was back then and plus it was something new to me that i had learned. I love how we all work together to debate back and forward like lawyers and its a good program to be in.
Mini Mock Trial
On July 14 my group and I did a mini mock trial that was based on a young female going to trial for cheating on her test. I believe what was said in the scrip was dumb, because she basically told on herself that she did cheat. But anyway I was on the defender side and we had to defend the school that suspended her for cheated. Of coarse we lose the case but over all I just through it was a fun trial to do, and I loved it.
Getting Started
We are in week two of Work Ready. I was in this program last year. A lot has changed since then, for example there is way more people than last year. The mock trial is very informational and explains some of the situations involved in the legal system. So far we have read about a case called"Beyond The Flame". Our group is excited and cannot until we present the mock trial. The mentors in our group are very helpful. Everyday they are getting us prepared for the mock trial. To sum it all up this has been a good summer job so far.
Mini Mock Trial
The first mini mock trial we had was interesting and fun. As a lawyer, I was able to question witnesses, along with my colleagues, and persuade the jury to find in favor of the plaintiff. I can't wait for the big mock trial.
New Kids On The Mock is making progress
Mock Trial is a new and interesting experience for me. I wasn't actually 100% percent sure on what it was excactly about but i am very open to new enperiences and new knowledge. In Mock Trial we learn about trail, court cases, and law terms but in a fun way. My favorite experience in Mock Trial is the practice case because we played out the roles of the lawyers, witnesses, and the one legged judge (Brendan). So far it is good because my parents always say I am a very quick and savvy thinking, well spoken (sometimes I even speak too much) kid so I think me being in Mock Trial helps and augments my speaking skills.
.:The New Kids Are Here:.
Hey there! My name is Paris, and I'm a member of a BITS program group that will be showcasing a mock trial exhibition. We haven't gotten to look at the "big" case we'll be working with, but our mentors (Liz, Jay and Brenton) tell us that it's geared towards the idea of Environmental Justice. They literally say these words at least 10 times a day! In an explosion of group creativity, we've decided to call ourselves New Kids On The Mock.
Today, we've all gotten together to log into and fill out our blog a little. This is our place to explain what we're doing with our mentors and note everything that we learn and experience, so I welcome you to our blog.
To date, we've done so much it's hard to try to remember it all! The first thing that comes to mind is all the icebreakers our mentors have done with us. Working with such large group can have it's ups and downs, so we really had to get to know each other some before we could do anything! Once we got the hang of the group effort idea we delved right into the concept of mock trial, which is basically a court case with everyone in the group given a job, from prosecutors to witnesses.
We've done more icebreakers. We've done mini mock trials to get an idea of the process. We've read into actual environmental cases (Like the Wade fire of 1978) and watched the movie Erin Brockovich to help us understand the responsibility we have to the environment. We've done even more still icebreakers.
I can't even begin to cover all of the things we've done, so I'll just leave you with the point our mentors have been drilling into us:
It's easy to say someone needs to do something about protecting our environment, but it's a whole different ball game to say I need to do something about protecting our environment. Get familiar with the difference with us.
Y'all come back now, ya hear?

The Mock Trial Experience
I'm Sierra.
Mock Trial is a new and different experience. It's pretty cool so far. I'm actually learning something. We've done mini mock trial, learned about past environmental crimes and now blogging. Even though I always thought law was a bore so far in this program it hasn't been. This also helped me realize all the things that I already knew about law and confirmed my opinions about law. I'm looking to see what's going to happen next.
01 July 2010
Welcome!
This is the first post for the BITS program Environmental Mock Trial team.
Over the next few weeks we'll be learning about environmental justice, the court room, local cases of environmental crime, and building work ready skills. The students will be writing about their experiences and daily progress, supplemented with videos and pictures of what's been happening with the group.
There are two Mock Trial teams. Our team (named New Kids on the Mock) will be putting on the mock trial of Fair v. Paleotech at the end of the summer.
